  1. The Chocolate Museum (Schkolademuseum) in Cologne (Koln) is a must. I went there last month, and even though I'm 19 years old I still had a lot of fun. You get to see Lindt chocolate being made right there! Plus you get free samples, and there's also a chocolate fountain there where there is ALWAYS a huge line of kids waiting for samples (i was one of them hahaha).

If you want, the Roman ruins in Trier are pretty nice as well (the city is the oldest in Germany and is 1300 years older than Rome itself). The Kaiserthermen (Roman baths) are spectacular and there are nice underground tunnels where the kids can get lost lol (so maybe not too good of a destination).

The Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen, Bavaria, is also a great place to visit. It looks like Cinderella castle (and is the basis for Disneyland's castle) and is an awesome sight.

I'm not sure what your kids like, so that's the extent of my advice. Cities you should definitely avoid (i found extremely boring) are: Stuttgart (though if your kids love cars they will love the BMW and Porsche museums there) and Frankfurt.

    Hope you enjoy your trip!

Edit: If you are visiting during Oktoberfest, I would recommend avoiding Munich at all costs, unless you want to pay extremely high lodging fees and see a lot of drunk foreigners drinking their heads off.
