hey I'm 18 and thinking of doing a gap year with the Navy or air force next year. However there's just one thing. I need to get fit and to bulk up a little since I don't have a big build. Any suggestions?

  1. Hey there! Just have a look on the DoD website ( www.defence.gov.au) and click on the links for the different services. They have suggested workouts to bring you up to the rookies fitness standards.

    Air Force = www.defencejobs.gov.au/recruitmentCentre...

    www.raaf.gov.au/organisation/units/1rt...

    Navy / Army / Air Force = www.defencejobs.gov.au/fitness

There is also the recruiting phone number, 13 19 01. Call up and have a chat to some of the recruiters, after all, its what they are there for!

Take a look at www.defencejobs.gov.au too, it explains a lot of other questions you might have too.

The gap year site is www.defencejobs.gov.au/education/gapYear

Hope that helps, and if I have missed anything, let me know and I'll try and find out for you!

  2. You don't need to have a muscular build for the Defence Force. On the fitness tests, all you're expected to do are pushups, situps and a run. Trust me when I say skinnier types tend to do better on those.

But if you're technically underweight, your best course of action is to get a personal trainer. If you eat extra to get over the limit, the stressful lifestyles at recruit training will likely make you lose a kilo or two at least.
