Question:

Suggestions to secure a glass table top?

I have a wooden table that had a cover to put magazines or things in. We took the cover off when painting it and now we are interested in putting a glass top on it instead of the cover. The table measures 46 x 6 1/2 inches. There is a 3/4" border that the glass would be sitting on. Are there any suggestions to keep the glass secure so it won't fall off if it's easily bumped?

  1. rubber picture frame bumpers.

  2. A piece of glass that large will be quiet heavy.  I am assuming you would put glass that is thicker than widow glass in it.  It would not come out easily if bumped.

  3. The glass for that top is going to be probably 1/4" thick, so it will be pretty heavy, and unlikely to move.  However, to be safe, I'd just peruse the hardware store, and seek out some little "L" brackets that could be secured to the table, and would rise past the edge of the glass, then bend over the top for just 1/4" or so.

Another idea would be to go with six velcro squares (two in the middle of the long run).  This secures it, but leaves it removeable.

  4. the first thing you need to remember when using glass in this mannor is that it should be tempered glass.

this is glass that is heated and when impacted breaks into very small parts. similar to a side vent window of a vehicle.

the other thing is that the edges need to be rounded off so as it will not have sharp edges.

now, if the glass you have is tempered, it will already have smooth edges.

as for it moving around, i would install the felts you can purchase for under the legs of chairs and apply them to your coffee table and set the glass on that.
