Question:

Suicide that looks like natural death?

Hi, I am looking for a way of suicide which could seem as a natural death.

I am writer (not professional, but if this novel is finished I have some possibilities to publish it) and the story I am trying to conclude needs this component.

After the end of a loving relationship, the main character dies by natural causes, but in fact is a suicide which cannot be discovered. Then, readers are the only ones who know the truth, but the other characters of the story believes he died by natural reasons.

I would like to find a complex method with some scientific reasoning (something like House cases would be great, haha) in order to provide realistic points to the story.

As you could have deduced from these words, I am NOT an English writer, and for that reason, if you did not understand something of this question, make me know it, please.

Thanks for reading

  1. OK, hopefully I can help you because I've watched a LOT of forensic shows.

There are poisons that are [almost] undetectable in the body unless the medical examiner does very specific toxicology tests to see if poisons are present.  Most medical examiners will not go this far in testing for poison unless poison is already suspected as the cause of death.

    Example: succinylcholine

I saw one show where a person was intentionally injected with AIDS, but that would be a painfully looong drawn-out suicide.

A gas leak in the house perhaps? Maybe accidental salmonella poisoning?

The best thing I can think of is medical help gone wrong.  For instance, there are certain drugs that can restart someone's heart if their heart is failing, like Epinephrine, but if this drug were given to someone with a healthy heart, it can be fatal.

Hope this helps!  I hope I didn't scare you with any of my suggestions, I just watch a lot of television ;o)

  2. You don't whether the death was accepted as natural causes when the body was found, or if an autopsy was performed.

Drowning is a good way if you can show that the character is serious about doing it. Most detectives rule drowning as accidental because of the instinct to stay alive that takes over. I have included the URL of a site I think will interest you.

  3. one way i know is by injecting yourself with AIR.....this will cause an air bubble to form in the blood and causes a heart attack
