I want to start running in some way for Basketball. Should I run suicides or normal running, like running a mile. And if I should run suicides, is it ok to run them in the grass?

  1. Definitely both, last season our coach had a retired drill instuctor come to every practice and make us run about 1 to 2 miles and do other exercises. Then our coach wuld have us run suicides or supermans and stuff for the quick burst running that you need. Trust me you will feel so much better in the 4th quarter when your hardly out of breath and your watching the other guys huff and puff. Doing suicides on grass is ok because its a little easier on ur legs and feet than hardwood.

  2. do both, alternate days. this will get your endurance and speed/foot work up

  3. Neither. Both are detrimental to speed/power/explosiveness development (the most important abilities in bball and most team sports) - bathing your muscles in lactic acid is the fastest way to destroy fast twitch fibres.

Your training should focus on getting faster/stronger/more explosive through speed training/weights/plyometrics. You get (match) fit by playing  games of basketball/ training drills (i.e. playing the sport), not by running suicides and several miles/day.

For general fitness/aerobic work, I'd run intervals (extensive tempo runs) e.g.. 100m repeats @ 65-70% speed with 30-45s rest between runs (stopping the session when you can no longer maintain that speed/excessive lactic acid build up occurs). .

Running on grass is a good idea because it's much kinder (less impact) on your joints/tendons - will give them a reprieve from the stress of concrete they get during the bball season.

I'd strongly encourage you to read up the articles here by Kelly Baggett - a highly respected strength and conditioning coach, who has trained a lot of bball players - will give you all the info you need to get a program started: http://www.higher-faster-sports.com/arti...

  4. well, what you could do because basketball makes you run in short burst at top speed and you must have the endurance to play and not be tired. you can run both. as you run suicides you will get your body in shape for the short burst of sprinting. You can also run a mile or two, to help with your endurance, i am a runner and basketball player and i find that the sprints and distance really help me in both sports!
