I have a older Mobile Home (12FT X 65FT) & wish to install a large enought window unit for cooling and energy saving purposes.

I have one 5000 BTU unit currently installed in the kitchen area, toward the front of Mobile Home, but wish to install another unit back toward the rear of mobile home, but can not decide on size & make ?.

Does any one have the better recommendations of what size & where to buy an air conditioner for this Mobile Home?

Thank You.

  1. If you get anything larger than 15000 BTU you will need to run 220 volt line.  Your best bet would be a 12000 BTU portable and you will only need 3 or 4 inch vent line going to outside and it will run on 110 volts.  Window unit will be about $100.00 cheaper.

  2. You want a 2nd one the same size as your 1st, ~5,000 BTUs.  Any more powerful, and it's a fire hazard, with the wiring you have.

As far as make and model goes, I've found the off brands sold by Home Depot to be just as good as the more expensive name brands.  How long they'll last depends on how hard they run, and whether or not you actually do any seasonal maintenance.

If you have the type of roof that needs to be coated, doing that will keep it 10 degrees cooler inside.

  3. I assume you are considering a 110 volt unit so you wont have to do any additional wiring? given the age of your place and not knowing the amount of insulation you have I would go a little bigger than needed. without looking at the spec sheets i think you could put a 5 to 8 thous. BTU unit in. Try looking at Amana, frigidaire and Carrier PTAC thru the wall units ( or window). I am not a fan of Gibson, Fedders, Craft Comfortaire or whirlpool. each brand comes in a size compatible to put in a window. measure first! and compare the manufacturers warranty. Google the manufacturers and get a list of authorized dealers for the brand you are interested in.

  4. A general rule of thumb is 10000btus per 500 sf ... you have 780 sf total

another 5000btu unit at the other end should work fine, close any unused rooms, and make sure they aren't on the same circuit breaker...
