Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari handed in a written transfer request to the club, with Sunderland emerging as favourites to sign the 26-year-old.
Black Cats coach Steve Bruce expressed his desire to snap up the former Portsmouth player on a loan term, as the manager wants to have more options in the middle. With Muntari also wanting a move away, Bruce would want to act quickly
and sign him before the end of the transfer window.
Lack of first team opportunities this season propelled Muntari to demand a transfer, as majority of his 12 first team appearances have been somewhat of a cameo. Sunderland, however, is not the only club interested in signing the
Ghanaian, as a host of other European clubs also want him. Bids are likely to flow in the next few days.
Inter Milan director Marco Branca held a press conference and confirmed that the 26-year-old had indeed expressed his desire to leave.
"He [Muntari] has made himself available to leave as long as a team wants him and is interested in him. He is a lad who is close to us, he is a good person, even though he expresses opinions of someone who wants to play," stated
the technical director.
Muntari has won every Italian title available to him and won the 2010 UEFA Champions League as well. He was also part of the Portsmouth side that won the 2008 FA Cup. Moreover, Muntari’s screamer from the half line in the 2010
World Cup was one of the best goals of the tournament.
A return to the Premier League would not be a bad option for the 26-year-old as Sunderland are currently challenging for the Champions League spot. Since Muntari has the ability to play in the centre of the park and can also act
as a defensive or box to box player in other situations, the Black Cats will guarantee the player first team opportunities as they have a lot of space in the midfield.
