replacing the monarchy and the emperor with the republic and the president has more +ve effects.  created an awareness of the pple's power to play their part in the political process.  when this occurs, it unleashes forces that change the social and cultural menu of nation.  new ideas, new inventions, new ways of doing things spring forth.  new architecture is seen in france.  industrial revolution made much progress.  france was in the forefront as with uk, and other colonialists.  

if not, france would perhaps be a little further back from the others.  look at today - isnt better than with the emperor
