Summer Ashley Mortimer secures Women’s 50m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Summer Ashley Mortimer of Canada secured gold medal of the Women’s 50m freestyle in S10 category on second day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Friday, August 31.
The Canadian swimmer outsmarted her opponents over the finishing blockade for gold medal. She faced no difficulty from her fellow swimmers in the start and surfaced on the wall for the title.
With her unstoppable efforts, Mortimer remained one stroke ahead of her closest competitor and clocked a time of 28.10 seconds for gold medal.
Her title claiming effort remained 0.14 seconds ahead of Sophie Pascoe of New Zealand, who followed her on the victory stand for silver medal by posting a time of 28.24 seconds.
Pascoe was traced by Elodie Lorandi of France, who stayed 0.43 seconds behind and improved the European mark of the race by submitting a time of 28.67 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Nina Ryabova of Russia, who was only 0.18 seconds slower from her former finisher and settled on the wall as fourth fastest swimmer by submitting a time of 28.85 seconds.
Similarly, fifth fastest spot of the race was obtained by Susan Beth Scott of USA, who remained just 0.07 seconds apart and transpired on the wall with a timing of 28.92 seconds.
The American swimmer was followed by Aurelie Rivard of Canada, who stayed only 0.06 seconds slower from her former finisher and reported a time of 28.98 seconds for sixth position.
Rivard enjoyed a benefit of 0.12 seconds over Katherine Downie of Australia, who tried hard to overpower her former finishers over the finishing end but failed to match their pace in the second half and ended seventh with a timing of 29.10 seconds.
Downie was chased by Anna Eames of USA, who remained only 0.31 seconds slower and completed her race in eighth place by posting a time of 29.41 seconds.
In addition, Mortimer was very happy with her gold finish in the 50m event and addressed her fans by saying that she would train harder to maintain her position in future.
