Question:

Summer Foreign Exchange student- earning money?

I am an Honors student in eighth grade. I recently was given a packet from the local Foreign exchange student department. I looked through the packet seeing which countries i was interested in. My parents looked at the description and agreed that it would be an amazing experience. But i didn't show them the price. My family is middle class, and three of my siblings are off in college. I would LOVE to do this while I'm still young, but i don't know how to pay for it.

I am only fourteen and you have to be fifteen to get a job. I don't want my parents to have to drive me because that would defeat the purpose of getting a profit. I know that i am of age to work at a farm, (does it include horse barns?) and i am with in walking distance of the village. Is it legal to wipe down tables for 50 cents a table? I really need ideas! This means A LOT to me.

  1. It shouldn't be that expensive to just do a summer exchange (depending on the amount of time). If you're living with a family, you normally only have to pay a very small amount for your meals and lodging. You may not even have to pay for housing if it's a true exchange and your family takes in someone in return. If the program is asking for a large amount of money, you may want to look into some other exchange programs.

As for finding a job at 14, I don't have any advice there. I had an extremely hard time finding a job, and I'm in my 20's with a college degree and a lot of experience. Maybe you'll have an easier time finding one than some of the rest of us are having.
