Question:

Summer Project?

This summer, I would like to get a foal, or breed my own mare, for my advanced students. My idea was that we could get a Swedish Warmblood from a local breeder who is shutting down his facility and my students could train the baby under the supervision of me and my staff. If all goes well, I would like to start breeding horses at the barn. Do you think this is a good idea?

  1. go ahead and get a baby instead of breeding your own.

even though its cool to have a horse you've had since it was born, but theres more horses in the world than good owners and your better off giving a horse that needs a home one than bringing another into the world

  2. Didn't you already delete your question about your horrible

    breeding plan?

You don't sound experienced, and you shouldn't be breeding.

  3. I think this sounds like a fun plan and a great interest for your students. The only thing I would be certain of is the quietness of the young horses nature. I'd be very particular that you were starting with the right horse. I wouldn't ask any advanced students to deal with a pushy type of animal.

The type of horse I'd be looking for would have a calm eye, hold his head stretched out and low and appear calm when you are viewing him. Having dealt with stud horses and broken/handled many, the quiet ones stand out from the start and they will always be quieter in nature.

So go for it, just make sure you are starting with the correct horse, not a pretty one that has his head stuck up in the air, looking over the top of you all with a pushy walk over you attitude. With this type you have 5 times the work to do, and it takes many years to have them perfect for a riding school.

Best of luck with this, wait till your students hear you plan - there will be great excitement.

  4. It is my opinion that unless you are a professional breeder, breeding horses for a specific purpose where there is a high demand, ie. a Quarter Horse for Rodeo or some other special horse for a special event, then most of us regular people don't need to breed horses unless it is because we want to raise a foal for ourselves in which we will tend to for the life of this horse.

My opinion is based on all the horse rescues that are out there. All the PMU foals that are out there that have been abandoned and need homes. You can find a foal or yearling by the dozens within a 100 miles of any location in any state in the US.

Unless you have an outstanding horse registered and papered that is going to put high quality foals on the ground, why breed? I think if you want to teach your students to take care of a horse what better way then to teach your students to rescue a horse and care for a horse that was bound for slaughter. I speak from experience I have two horses that I saved from slaughter and they have become the most wonderful horses in the world.

  5. it sounds fun!

u sound very experienced so u kno wat to do but i think it would be a great learning experience for the students.

    good luck!
