Question:

Summer Reading help/tips

by  |  earlier

I still need to finish my summer reading. I hate my first book so far and I have 3 more books after that! Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for me or know how I can make this reading a little more interesting. I usually love to read but these books are horrible. I'm taking all honors classes this year and it's already overwhelming!!

here are my books:

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros?

My Escape from Slavery: The true story of my 10 years in captivity and my journey to freedom in america by Francis Bok

Any positive comments about these books??

  1. Ugh, I know. It's like why can't they pick interesting books that people our age like? I've never read any of those books, so idk what to say to make your reading more enjoyable. But just try to tough it out. Maybe if you don't understand something you can look online for help. Sparknotes is good and you can try it, but they don't have a section for every single book ever made. (though I wish they did, that site can help make things clearer) Good luck! :)

  2. You might be able to find audio versions of the books to keep it more interesting, then you can follow along with the book, or do something else with your hands (personally, when I'm trying to focus my attention I need something to fiddle with).

Otherwise it's just about knuckling down, eliminating distractions, and reading along. Set goals for yourself. You can measure in time, page-turns, pages, chapters, paragraphs, whatever it takes to get through the goal. When I read stuff that isn't interesting, I mark off what I have to read in a sitting, such as a chapter, and stick a bookmark there. Then I know what I have to do to allow myself a break from the book (as in get up and walk around). You can also give yourself mini-rewards like a skittle, a peanut, a sunflower seed, a chip, or an M&M for each page or paragraph you read. Set goals to read a few chapters in the book each day, or set a goal to finish a book per week.

Sometimes, a book gets better as you go along. These sound kind of interesting to me actually. You might find yourself enjoying it more as you get into each book.

You can also work on all the books at one time, read here and there out of all of them...then you have a choice of what to read. If you don't feel like one, you can pick one of the others.

  3. Try to make it interesting think into little things and it will be interesting in no time just don't procrastinate or your summer will be gone before you know it

  4. I've never read these books so I can't tell you much about them. If you start into a book and just push yourself to keep going instead of stopping you may finally get into the book. I know I do.

  5. Just read and imagine and picture the book. That's what I do. I'm just like you. I'm taking all honors classes next year and I have 1 book to read over the summer and I have not finished it yet. It's pretty boring so what I do is read ahead and then you now something excitings about to happen.
