Summer and winter olympics in the same year???

when did the Olympics switch from having the summer and winter Olympics in one year to having them two years apart and why???

  1. The winter Olympics were changed in 1994 with the Lillehammer games. I believe this was mainly a logistical thing--it was a lot for the IOC to do to stage 2 Olympics in the same year. Of course the world being what it is, the prospect of higher TV revenues may have been a factor as well.


  2. 1992 was the last year to have both a Summer and Winter Olympics in the same calendar year with Albertville, France hosting the Winter Games and Barcelona, Spain hosting in the summer.  Two years later, Lillehammer, Norway hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics after the International Olympic Committee had decided in the mid-1980's to stagger to the games to increase the exposure of each.
