I'm going to the beach next weekend and planning to hit the used book store on Wed. I always pick up a few SciFi anthologies of short stories, but also want a novel... I'll probably only have time to finish one.

I remember growing up and reading Cardinal of the Kemlin... still one of my alltime Favs. Any adivce on that type of spy novel where I don't need to have read the previous 3 or be familliar with the "cast".

I had to give up on Clancy after the Red Dragon, or whatever it was... he go too preachy.

THanks!

  1. If you like spy book then i think Anthony Horowitz alex rider series might be to you're liking. Its about a 16 year old teenage extraordinaire. The series begins with stormbreaker,Point Blank,Skeleton Key,Eagle Strike,Scorpia,Ark Angel and finally (which i think is the best)Snake Head. If you like fantasy then i highly recommend eragon and eldest, They are long books and immediately pull you in to the story and is about a 16 year old boy and his dragon they have an epic jorney across the whole empire.

  2. the anthony horrowitz boks about alex rider are great, i have all of them, another writer that i found is robert muchamore, his books are about children spies, its funny, exciting, and its a teenager book so its not childish.theres, the recruit, class a , maximun security, the killing, divine madness, man vs beast, the fall, mad dogs, the sleepwalker, dark sun, and then the general...trust me there great

  3. For a book kind of similar to Cardinal, try Nelson DeMille's Charm School. It is about a spy training school in the Soviet Union that trains operatives/moles for insertion into the US. It takes place about the same time as Cardinal, and will keep you guessing.

If you haven't already read it, try Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy. This is more of straight-forward military special ops story and features many characters you are already familiar with. Not too much politics, if I remember correctly, and more action.

This is not really a spy novel, but it has a lot of action, adventure and intrigue in is and is a lot of fun to read, but you might like the books of Matthew Reilly, starting with either Ice Station or Seven Deadly Wonders. These are the first books in their respective series, but can also be read singly. They have tons of action and are a relatively quick read.

You might also try some of the Bourne books by Robert Ludlum, starting with The Bourne Identity. These are the books that the recent movies were based upon.

For a thriller type novel, try Utopia by Lincoln Child, which is set in a high-tech theme park.
