Question:

Summer golf practice?

I am a senior at high school next year and planning to try out for golf team in spring (2009). i consistently shot low 80's but never get to 70's, so i plan to do practice over summer (from mid june) but i dont really know where to start. i have quite solid short-mid iron shots but my less than 100~80 yards (short games) shots are terrible, like SW (58 degree) could be my worst club and putter.

So what can i do for practice and how much do you think my score will improve by intense summer practice?

Thank you for answering!

  1. It is quite obvious where you have to start, on the short game. That doesn't mean that you have to master the 58 degree sand wedge, In fact, the more you stay away from that wedge and use lower lofted irons, the better your game will become.Practice all the half shot and three quarter shot swings with each club from 140 yards in to the center of the green. Example 140 yards is a 7 iron . Practice hitting the same shot with a 3/4 six iron. 100 yards your normal PW? Hit a 3/4 nine . Developing tempo for different length shots is the key to good golf. Good Luck !!

  2. read dave pelz short game/putting bible, he knows what he's talking about

  3. Over summer I would suggest you work on your game from the hole outwards (i.e. 3'putts, 6' putts, longer ones). Once you are comfortable with your putting and can start dropping 4-5'' putts 8 out of 10 times, then you can move to the edge of the green and work on your chipping. It is amazing how much less pressure you feel if you know you can sink putts. To figure out how much your game will improve by doing this, keep stats on the following DIF (drive in fairway), GIR (greens in regulation), Putts, U/D (up and downs). If you track the stats for all your games you will be able to see where you weaknesses lie and what you really need to work on. Get your U/D stats up to around 80%+ and you know you will be shooting good scores.
