This summer I had two part time jobs, totalling about a gross income of about $800. In illinois and my position, about 18% of my check is taken out for federal, state, medicare and soc sec. Since I make less than $5,4xx I dont need to file a return, BUT do I get some of that money back?

  1. Any money taken out for federal income tax (FIT) will be refundable under your scenario.  The state income tax may also be but not the others.

  2. Since some federal income tax was withheld, you should file a return to get it refunded - otherwise the government keeps it.  Depending on your state, you might or might not be required to file, and might or might not get a refund.

  3. you will have to file a return if you want money back.

Fill out the 1040 EZ and see what happens.  if you get money back then send it in.

  4. by law if you earn you file.  and you have 3 years to claim a refund.

But you are suppose to file a tax return/
