  1. What about letting her define an area of interest in discussion with you.  Then once you know what has her interest peaked, you can plug  that term along with the words "unit study" into any search engine.  There are many resources for such unit studies .

Let's say she loves oceanography, you can go to a parent teacher store and find a unit study on that subject, or try Currclick on the web to download a lapbook, or just design your own independent study.

Again, just an ex.   - start with an internet search of the term and identify areas for more concentration investigation.  Does she wonder more about waves and currents?  Well, follow that interest. Go to the library and get some books about waves.  What about wave generators?  Is there a water park nearby, where you could arrange to have here see what the wave generator in the wave pool looks like and how it works?   Make a wave model in a bottle.  How does this relate to alternative energy?    What about sound waves......are those similar in properties?

Let her write a poem about waves.

What about reading the book  "The Big Wave".    Now what about tsunamis.  How do they happen.   What are the outcomes of tsunamis hitting land.(in the past and today)

You get the idea.............let your (her) mind wander and follow it down the path of learning.  Take pictures as she follows her passions and interests.  Make notebooks and journals of the journey and learn the way learning was meant to be.

  2. These 10 terrific weeks sets from Usborne are a bit on the pricey side, but they are great, easy way to keep kids learning over the summer:

I would also recommend getting out of the house a bunch - swimming, nature hikes, etc. and indoor activities like museums when it's too hot.

If you are travelling at all over the summer, here are some great ideas for carschooling:
