i am having a complete writers block. I am reading " of nightingales that weep" by Katherine Paterson and i dont know what the theme could be. This novel is about a samurai's daughter and how she has to overcome many wars and choose between the loyalty of her people or her lover. Her mother also marries an ugly potter, which is a big difference from her life in the palaces of Japan. But i cant think of a theme. Please help!?

  1. I haven't read the book so I am extrapolating from your summary.

Sounds like the theme is: Personal choice and personal fulfillment come at a cost but are more humanly fulfilling than patriotism and fulfilling public responsibilities.

I don't know whether the Asian venue affects this theme or how, not having read the book.
