Question:

Summerland Disaster 1973 Isle Of Man?

This is something that I've recently discovered, (partly because it happened 6 years before I was born!) It greatly grabbed my interest because it sounded like a great place before it burned down, brutalist concrete buildings fascinate me. I'm aware that 51 people got killed in the fire which is what makes it a disaster, but the loss of the building was in itself a disaster too, from what I've already read about it, it was state of the art, it used brand new materials, it was climate controlled, all this in 1971! My question is, can anyone remember either what happened in 1973 and or what it was like before the fire?

  1. You could say the same thing about Pleasure Island in Liverpool, that was open one day and closed permanetly the next!

  2. Two lads had been thrown out  for causing trouble,So they set fire to a pile of rubbish round the back, they had piled it up against a door,The place burnt down,What happened to the lads i do not know.

  3. I was only little when this disaster happened.  We were on holiday on the Isle of Man on the two weeks before and I remember the day after we arrived home it was in all the papers.

I remember parts of it vividly, like the underground fair and the huge wobbly slides.  It was a really fun place for a kid to be, and it must've been for adults aswell cos we were there a lot.

  4. some info here but i cant find a picture before the fire
