Sun Yang captures Men’s 1500m freestyle title: Day eight – 2011 FINA World Championships
Sun Yang of China dominated the Men’s 1500m freestyle meet, on last day of the Federation International de Natation (FINA) organised 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, China.
Yang presented his astonishing swimming skills and won the title of the 1500m event, by submitting a wonderful world record time of 14 minutes and 34.14 seconds. With his magnificent effort, Yang improved the ten-year old championship and world record of
14 minutes and 34.56 seconds, set by Grant Hackett of Australia in 2001.
Yang was comfortably away from his following swimmer, Ryan Cochrane of Canada, who stayed 10.32 seconds behind the gold medallist and reported in a silver winning time of 14 minutes and 44.46 seconds. Cochrane maintained a lead of only 1.20 seconds over
his strongest rival, Gergo Kis of Hungary, who pocketed the bronze medal of the event, by posting a third fastest time of 14 minutes and 45.66 seconds.
Kis was followed by Pal Joensen of France, who was just 0.67 seconds behind the third position holder and ended his swim in a fourth fastest time of 14 minutes and 46.33 seconds. His time was 6.03 seconds faster than his closest competitor, Chad La Tourette
of USA, who surfaced as the fifth best swimmer of the distant freestyle swim and reported a time of 14 minutes and 52.36 seconds.
La Tourette was in a reasonable lead over his closest rival and his team-member, Peter Vanderkaay, who ended his race in 15 minutes and 00.47 seconds. He was in a lead of nearly 15 seconds over Samuel Pizzetti of Italy, who surfaced as the seventh fastest
swimmer of the event, with a timing of 15 minutes and 15.81 seconds. The final spot of the event was obtained by Yohsuke Miyamoto of Japan, who produced a time of 15 minutes and 20.07 seconds.
Yang was delighted with the record breaking effort at his home pool, whereas, the winners received awards and accolades for their impeccable swims after the session. The event has witnessed some of the most scintillating swims from athletes and is also a
great platform for swimmers before the upcoming 2012 London Olympics.
