Sun Yang clinches Men’s 800m freestyle heats: Day three – 2011 FINA World Championships
Sun Yang of China conquered the top qualification spot of the Men’s 800m freestyle meet on the third day of the Federation Internationale de Natation organised 2011 World Championships on Tuesday, July 26, in Shanghai, China.
The 20-year-old Yang pocketed the fastest qualification seat into the final rounds, by overwhelming the efforts of his fellow swimmers, with a timing of 7 minutes and 45.29 seconds. His time was considerably away from the world mark of Lin Zhang, as the
Chinese swimmer claimed the title of same event in a time of 7 minutes and 32.12 seconds at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.
Yang was followed by Pal Joensen of Faroe Islands, who stayed only 0.16 seconds behind him and completed his swim in a second fastest time of 7 minutes and 45.55 seconds. Joensen was followed by his Canadian rival, Ryan Cochrane, who failed to overcome Joensen’s
effort with a difference of only 0.02 seconds and posted 7 minutes and 45.57 seconds for the third fastest seat.
The fourth best spot of the swim was obtained by Gergo Kis of Hungary, who stayed nearly three seconds behind Cochrane and entered the final with a timing of 7 minutes and 48.33 seconds. Kis was trailed by Tunisian swimmer, Oussama Mellouli, who remained
0.53 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and submitted a time of 7 minutes and 48.86 seconds.
Peter Vanderkaay of USA was the sixth finest swimmer to qualify for the final rounds, as he proved his qualification in a time of 7 minutes and 49.13 seconds. He was chased by Sebastien Rouault of France, who stayed 0.30 seconds behind him and reported in
a time of 7 minutes and 49.43 seconds. Vanderkaay’s team-member, Chad La Tourette, was the eight best qualifier of the sixteen-lap swim, as he ended his swim in a time of 7 minutes and 49.94 seconds.
The session concluded after the completion of preliminary rounds of all events, while these athletes will compete with each other in the final rounds to secure a podium finish.
