Sun Yang dominates Men’s 200m freestyle semi-finals – 2012 London Olympic Games
Sun Yang of China dominated the semi-finals of Men’s 200m freestyle on day two of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatic Centre on Sunday, July 29.
The 20-year-old Yang, who won gold medal of the 400m discipline on first day of the event, went full rampant in the second round of the 200m discipline.
With his fascinating efforts in the four-lap discipline, the world record holder of the 1500m freestyle, Yang is now one-step away from securing another gold medal of the Olympic Games.
He remained considerably ahead of his opponents from the start and made his way to the finishing wall for first position by producing a time of 1 minute and 45.61 seconds.
His fastest qualification effort remained 0.23 seconds ahead of Yannick Agnel of France, who qualified into the playoff as second best finisher by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 45.84 seconds.
Third finest qualification spot of the event was secured by defending champion, Park Taehwan of Korea, who finished his race in a time of 1 minute and 46.02 seconds.
Taehwan was followed by Paul Biedermann of Germany, who made his way to the finishing end with a fourth best qualifying effort of 1 minute and 46.10 seconds.
Following that, the audience witnessed scintillating form of USA’s Matthew Grevers in the Men’s 100m backstroke semi-finals. The 27-year-old Grevers remained half body length ahead of his following swimmer and entered the final as top contender for gold
medal with the timing of 52.66 seconds.
Grevers was trailed by Camille Lacourt of France, who earned second best spot in the playoff with an effort of 53.03 seconds.
Lacourt was traced by Liam Tancock of Great Britain, who stayed 0.22 seconds slower and occupied third finest spot in the playoff with an effort of 53.25 seconds.
Subsequently, Tancock was chased by Ryosuke Irie of Japan, who clocked a fourth fastest effort in the semi-finals and entered the playoff with a timing of 53.29 seconds.
In addition, Yang was confident of dominating the playoff of the freestyle discipline that will take place on Monday, July 30.
