Sun Yang excels in Men’s 1500m freestyle heats: Day seven – 2011 FINA World Championships
Sun Yang of China excelled his performance in the Men’s 1500m freestyle meet on the seventh day of the 2011 World Championships on Saturday, July 30, in Shanghai, China.
The world titles are the 14th Long Course Swimming Championships organised by the international sports governing body, Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA).
Yang proved his dominance over his fellow swimmers, by completing his swim in an admiring time of 14 minutes and 48.13 seconds. He was 13.69 seconds behind the world record of 14 minutes and 34.56 seconds, set by Australian swimmer, Grant Hackett in 2001.
Yang was followed by Gergo Kis of Hungary, who remained nearly four seconds away from Yang and occupied the second fastest qualification spot, with a timing of 14 minutes and 52.72 seconds. Peter Vanderkaay of USA surfaced as the third fastest swimmer to
qualify for the final rounds, as he stayed 2.27 seconds behind his closest competitor and reported a time of 14 minutes and 54.99 seconds.
Chad La Tourette of USA was the fourth finest swimmer to secure his spot in the final round, as he produced a time of 14 minutes and 55.59 seconds to enter the final contest. In the meantime, Ryan Cochrane of Canada appeared as the fifth dominant swimmer,
as he stayed just 0.27 seconds behind his former qualifier and clocked a time of 14 minutes and 55.86 seconds.
Cochrane stayed only 0.80 seconds faster than his closest competitor, Pal Joensen of France, who transpired as the sixth finest swimmer of the distant freestyle event, with a timing of 14 minutes and 56.66 seconds. Yohsuke Miyamoto of Japan managed to qualify
as the seventh best swimmer, as he posted a time of 14 minutes and 57.12 seconds. Samuel Pizzetti of Italy secured the eighth qualification spot, as he ended his swim in a time of 14 minutes and 58.30 seconds.
The session concluded after the completion of preliminary rounds of all events, while these finalists will face each other in the final of 1500m event to earn a podium finish.
