Sun Yang improves Olympic record of 400m freestyle – 2012 London Olympic Games
Chinese veteran and world record holder of the 1500m freestyle, Sun Yang improved the Olympic mark of 400m freestyle on opening day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in London Aquatic Centre on Saturday, July 28.
The 20-year-old Yang exceeded expectations of his supporters by winning the crown of the 400m freestyle discipline. With his continuous efforts, he remained untouchable throughout the race and shattered the Olympic record.
He remained just 0.07 seconds slower from the world record of 3 minutes and 40.07 seconds and finished his swim in a time of 3 minutes and 40.14 seconds for gold medal.
His title claiming effort remained in a lead of two body lengths over his strongest challenger and defending champion, Park Taehwan of Korea, who ended his race in a time of 3 minutes and 42.06 seconds for silver medal.
The second position holder was followed by USA’s Peter Vanderkaay, who remained two and a half body length apart and completed his race in a time of 3 minutes and 44.69 seconds for bronze medal.
Vanderkaay was followed by Yun Hao of China, who stayed almost 1.50 seconds slower and finished fourth in the event by producing a time of 3 minutes and 46.02 seconds.
Fifth finest spot of the race was obtained by Conor Dwyer of USA, who remained only 0.37 seconds slower from improving his position and clocked a timing of 3 minutes and 46.39 seconds.
Similarly, Dwyer was chased by Gergo Kis of Hungary, who remained almost 0.70 seconds slower from his former finisher and ended sixth in the event with an effort of 3 minutes and 47.03 seconds.
Kis was traced by David Carry of Great Britain, who remained 1.59 seconds slower and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 3 minutes and 48.62 seconds.
Eighth position of the race was secured by Ryan Napoleon of Australia, who remained nearly 0.65 seconds behind and tapped the wall with the timing of 3 minutes and 49.25 seconds.
In addition, Yang expressed happiness over his meticulous effort in the 400m discipline at the prize ceremony.
