Sun Young Yoo improves world ranking to 15th
Sun Young Yoo, who won the first major of the season, Kraft Nabisco Championship, has improved her ranking to 15th in the world women’s golf rankings.
Yoo played a superb game in the $2 million championship held at the Mission Hills Country Club and proved the critics wrong by racking up her major title.
Although most of the top rankings remained unchanged after the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the rise in Yoo’s ranking is being regarded as a good development in women’s golf.
Yoo displayed a stellar performance from the first round, as she kept most of the big names of the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) players at bay.
The field of the Kraft Nabisco Championship featured competent players that also included the current world number one Yani Tseng and the defending champion Stacy Lewis.
However, Yoo managed to keep the pressure high on her rivals, not giving them a chance to surge ahead on the leaderboard.
The South Korean star kicked off the first round in an impressive style, as she carded a 69. She stunned the spectators when she drained 2 birdies on the first two holes.
She appeared to be in a little pressure on the par-4 third hole, as she misjudged the ball and ended up recording a bogey.
She looked fired up again on the last two holes of the back nine. The major winner showed her magic putting skills on the difficult par-3 17th and par-5 18th, reeling off birdies to stand at overall score of 3-under 69.
She kept the momentum going in the second round as well, as she posted the same 69 to further consolidate her position on the leaderboard.
The third round offered some trouble to the 25-year-old South Korean, as she made too many careless putts. She recorded a 72, but bounced back in the final round by scoring a 69 again.
Yoo faced tough resistance from her nearest rival I.K Kim, as the match entered into playoffs. Kim could have hampered the South Korean from winning, but she failed to make the putt on regulation and lost the title.
Although Kim lost a chance to record a major victory, she managed to improve her world ranking to 5th.
