Sun Young Yoo in the Mobile Bay Classic roster
Sun Young Yoo, who won her first major title at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, is preparing to join the field of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic, slated to take place from April 26-29, at Magnolia Grove’s Crossings Course.
The Mobile Bay LPGA Classic will not be as tough as the first major championship of the current season, as the current world number one Yani Tseng is not in the field.
In addition to Yani Tseng, Michelle Wie and the Lotte Championship winner, Ai Miyazato, also decided to remain off the tournament.
Yoo was never expected to win the Kraft Nabisco Championship, given the tough field that contained titans like Suzann Pettersen and Paula Creamer. Yet the South Korean star did her best and carved out an impressive triumph.
Analysts said that the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic may offer plenty of features and a handsome purse, but it lacks competitiveness when compared with major events.
Despite the absence of some of the big names, the roster still contains players who are known to give a tough time to their rivals.
The players, who have been confirmed to participate in the much-hyped event, include Suzann Pettersen, Christina Kim, Na Yeon Choi, Paula Creamer, So Yeon Ryu, Si Ri Pak and Beth Bader who played well at Lotte Championship.
Maria Hjorth, who won the last edition of the Mobile LPGA Classic, is also in the roster. Hjorth said in one of her interviews that she will try to defend her title.
Although a champion at the same event, Hjorth came off worse in the Lotte Championship, as she failed to make the cut. She posted 78 and 70 in the first two rounds and had to walk off the course afterwards.
Yoo has been going well since the start of the 2012 season. Right after winning the major title, Yoo jumped to the 15th in the Women’s World Golf Rankings — something analysts attributed to the player’s unpredictable performance.
However, observers said that in order to battle big names in the upcoming events, Yoo needs to put confidence in her game.
After hoisting the trophy at the Mission Hills Country Club, the South Korean prodigy said that she was not confident about her capabilities and just played her game throughout the four days.
Some analysts pointed out that Yoo should not have expressed her skepticism in her abilities. “I didn’t think about winning today. I didn’t want to expect too much, and I didn’t want to let myself down, but I think I did better than I was thinking, so I’m
very happy,” the major winner said.
