Sunburst Greyhound Adoption Project and Kennel, an effort to safeguard retired greyhounds in Florida
Greyhound welfare organizations have joined hands in Florida, United States, to find loving families for the greyhounds who cannot shine at the racetracks anymore.
Three organizations striving to safeguard the rights of greyhounds have come together in an effort to re-home the retired greyhounds.
These organizations are, ‘The Greyhound Alliance’, ‘Emerald Coast Chapter of Greyhound Pets of America’ and ‘The Northern Consortium’.
The Greyhound Alliance would be responsible for providing substantial funds to this project through its various subsidiaries and channels.
Emerald Coast Chapter of Greyhound Pets of America would be responsible for locating loving families for the retired greyhounds. This is the largest greyhound re-homing organization in the United States.
‘The Northern Consortium’ comprises of several greyhound Adoptions groups. In the past, it has found loving and caring homes for over nine hundred retired greyhounds from the region of Panhandle, Florida.
The greyhound groups working in collaboration with the National Consortium primarily belong to the Great Lakes Region of United States.
Emerald Coast Chapter of Greyhound Pets of America and The Northern Consortium have volunteers that would train the ex-racers so that they are suitable and tame enough to live with a family.
The transport of the greyhounds from race tracks to their respective homes would also be the duty of the volunteers.
Two welfare organizations by the names of ‘Ebro’s Pet Express Adoption Kennel’ and 'Ebro Greyhound Park' are providing the area where the retired greyhounds would be kept in kennels for the duration of their training and until suitable homes can be found
for them.
Retired greyhounds from all over Florida and Virginia would be kept in the area provided by the Ebro’s Greyhound Park and Ebro’s Pet Express Adoption Kennel.
Over 150 retired greyhounds would be temporarily homed in this area, available for adoption by families.
The Sunburst Greyhound Adoption Project has been so successful so far that by the end of September, this year, more than 300 retired greyhounds would be available for adoption.
All the retired greyhounds that come to the Kennel for adoption first go through a detailed and strenuous medical examination and treatment.
This includes a physical exam of a greyhound, removal of his/her reproductive organs, and vaccination against all forms of expected greyhound diseases and infections.
After the medical examination, surgeries and inoculations, the greyhounds wait for their turn of adoption. Once a suitable home and family is located, the greyhound is securely transported to his/her new home.
The primary focus of this project is going to be re-homing the retired greyhounds from racetracks in the Ebro, Monticello and Pensacola.
However, the efforts of the Sunburst Greyhound Adoption Project are not going to be ‘limited’ to these regions only, but in fact greyhounds from all over the country are welcome in the kennels under this project.
