The game started with Gyan taking a shot blocked by Upson, Kieron Dyer played offside while the kick was taken by Craig Gordon.
Jordan Henderson took the very first corner with an in-swinging shot saved by Robert Green.
Lee Cattermole was booked in the 8th minute, for his unsupportive behaviour referee awarded a free kick taken by Victor Obinna.
Lee Catter mole made an effort from 30 yards straight to the safe gloves of Robert Green.
Nedum Onuoha conceded a free kick for a tackle on Jonathan Spector, kick was taken by Obinna and saved by Craig Gordon.
At the 18th minute, Kieran Richardson produced a shot that went harmlessly above the goal. Jordon Henderson took a corner kick but failed to convert as Boa Morte cleared the ball.
At the 30th minute, Carlton Cole was caught offside, free kick was taken by Craig Gordon.
At the 33rd minute, Jordan Henderson got off the mark by scoring a sole goal of the match from inside the penalty area to the top left corner of the net.
Asamoah Gyan assisted for the goal with his magical pass, Sunderland 1 – 0 West Ham United.
Sunderland started building pressure around the visitors.
Jordon Henderson scored his first goal of the season that put West Ham United back to the foot of Barclays English Premier League. The 21 year old struck 11 minutes before the half time to give his side an advantage.
The Hammers were still basking on their successful match against the champions Manchester United in which they thrashed them out of the Carling Cup.
West Ham United put pressure on the opposite goal but failed to convert any opportunity. Sunderland went on the defensive mode and did extremely well.
In the 68th minute, Luis Boa Morte left the field in exchange for Zavon Hines and the very next moment, a free kick was awarded to Victor Obinna for an unfair challenge by Anton Ferdinand.
At the 71st minute, Jordan Henderson took the corner kick but in vain. Steed Malbranque came in for Darren bent and in the 76th minute, Victor Obinna took an in swinging corner kick cleared by Asamoah Gyan.
At the 79th minute, Victor Obinna was that close to equalize but he failed to snatch a goal with his reckless effort as the ball hit the poll and bounced back.
Julien Faubert joined the squad in place of Tal Ben Heim, Ahmed Elmohamady replaced the star of the night Jordan Henderson.
At the 88th and 89th minute, two back to back corners were awarded to Sunderland but they failed to convert any. Scott Parker gave a free kick for a ruthless challenge on Asamoah Gyan. Scott Parker was booked and the kick was taken
by Steed Malbroque at the 90th minute.
Sunderland replaced Asamoah Gyan with Boudewijn Zenden. During the stoppage time, Ahmed Elmohamady came in from outside the penalty area and fired a shot but missed the target.
In the 93rd minute, Craig Gordon saved a free kick by Faubert as a result of a challenge from Steed Malbroque on Zavon Hines.
