Apart from the fact that they had a terrible form at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland were criticised for not scoring goals. Before Sunday, Sunderland had managed to score just two goals in five games, which led some supporters to call for Bruce’s removal.
However, Bruce’s position is no longer in question after the impressive win over a difficult Stoke City side. The Black Cats scored four goals and managed to maintain a clean sheet at the same time. The assistant manager spoke to the media after the match
and revealed how under stress Bruce had been because of the poor results.
Black said while speaking to reporters:
“He's a winner, he always has been and he will always be that way, so it hurts him when it doesn't go the way he wants it.”
Black revealed that the English manager had been hurt by the unfair criticism over the past few weeks since he had desperately wanted to get off to a winning start. After a very busy transfer window in the summer, Bruce’s side have not had much luck in the
new English Premier League campaign.
He continued:
“Sometimes, I think the criticism is unfair, I would have to say in my opinion, it is unfair because he works hard and he puts decent teams together.
But such is life. That's the pressure of managing in the Premier League.”
The Black Cats assistant manager felt Bruce had been treated unfairly by the supporters, but admitted life as a Premier League manager was difficult. However, he was certain the notable win over Stoke City had uplifted Bruce’s spirits.

Black revealed:
“Every team has to build and get new players into the team, but today the quality the manager has signed was there for everybody to see and hopefully, we can maintain that level of performance.”
