Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has revealed he has not yet had talks with the owner and chairman of the club Ellis Short regarding possible transfers in the winter transfer window.
While the Black Cats have been linked to a few players since the beginning of the January transfer window, O’Neill insisted he did not have players lined up. The Northern Irish manager revealed he had not yet spoken to the club’s owner regarding the issue.
O’Neill has been in talks with Ellis Short regarding various matters, but has so far not discussed anything relating to transfers. According to the new Sunderland manager the transfers were something he wished to deal with once everything else had been sorted
out.
O’Neill said in an interview:
“I have had conversations with Ellis. They have not really been business-like conversations.
If something does materialise, then that would be great. I am conscious of just about everything around here, but my only concern is we arrive at February 1 and that's it.”
The Sunderland boss admitted he was aware of the fact that he only had a few more days to bring in new signings before the winter transfer window closed down. After that, O’Neill will be stuck with the existing squad until the end of the season.
He was somewhat satisfied with the squad, but admitted the Black Cats could definitely use some more firepower in front of goal. In their fixture against Chelsea last week Sunderland failed to find the back of the net as Chelsea secured a 1-0 win.
O’Neill felt his side had put in a decent performance and deserved at least a draw for their efforts, but sadly they had failed to find the back of the net, which he felt was down to poor luck.
He revealed:
“I think scoring a goal is very difficult. I also added the rider last week rather comically - it wasn't that funny - that it's not that difficult either.
You just put the ball in the net and then we can all go home and be very, very pleased with the weekend's work.”
