Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has insisted the Black Cats did not have to worry about their position in the League but had to focus on the amount of points they were securing.
Under O’Neill Sunderland managed a 4-1 win over Wigan Athletic, making it four wins, a draw and just one defeat in the last six fixtures. They are now at 10th place on the Premier League table but the Northern Irish manager did not think the Black Cats were safe as yet.
The manager claimed that he was not too concerned with the fact that his side were now at tenth place on the table. He revealed he was still concerned that they did not have enough points to claim they were safe from relegation.
O’Neill said in an interview:
“The positions in the table don't concern me, it's the points on the board that are the most important thing. To win gives us a second or two of breathing space, and that's what it is.
We've got some tough matches still coming up in January, important games for us. To take a break from the Premier League with that win gives us a bit more confidence.”
Another of O’Neill’s concerns are the various injuries within the squad, with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jack-Colback-c17451 currently sidelined. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is injured but has chosen to play in a face mask, which has affected his performance.
While Sunderland have not yet identified targets in the winter transfer window, O’Neill revealed he intended to speak to the owners about the possibility of bringing in new players. He admitted it was not yet certain if the Black Cats were going to sign new players but he felt they had to, to continue on with their improved form.
He revealed:
“I'll speak to the owner in the next couple of days and we'll have a look at it.
I'll just reiterate, I didn't take this http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684 on the promise of money available in January. The injuries will cause us a problem because when it gets to February 1 that's all you can do, that's it for the season.”
