Sunderland boss Steve Bruce certain Asamoah Gyan will be a success with Stephane Sessegnon in attack
Sunderland boss Steve Bruce revealed he was certain striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Asamoah-Gyan-c6791 would go on to score more than 20 goals in the upcoming season. Bruce also confirmed there had currently been no enquiries from other sides for the 25-year-old Ghanaian forward and
that he expected Gyan to continue at the Stadium of Light in the new season.
Gyan signed for Sunderland in the summer of 2010 for a club record transfer fee of £13 million from Ligue 1 side Rennes on a long-term four year deal. He got off to an incredible start in the English Premier League but his progress was hampered by an unfortunate
hamstring injury he picked up in April, which sidelined the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ghana-c2905 international for the remainder of the season.
Despite that Gyan managed to recover for the last fixture of the 2010-2011 season against West Ham United. He made a total of 33 appearances in all competitions and found the back of the net 11 times, with ten of those goals coming in the Premier League.
The Black Cats boss was convinced Gyan would perform better in the upcoming campaign.
Bruce said while speaking to reporters:
“I think Gyan will be far, far better this year than he was last year.
We want him to improve. He got a bad injury towards the end of last season, so I think it's a big year for Gyan and hopefully he can be better than he was.
He certainly understands English football a bit better. He got 11 goals for us last season, so he's got a chance to get 20 this time.”
While Gyan has been linked with a host of Premier League sides after his impressive debut in the Premier League with Sunderland last season, Bruce revealed there had in fact been no offers for the Ghanaian striker. London side Tottenham Hotspur have been
rumoured to be considering making a bid for Gyan, but Bruce dismissed the speculation.
Bruce revealed:
“I've seen the speculation about him but certainly, as far as I'm aware, there have been no enquiries.”
Steve Bruce said he was planning to partner Gyan with January transfer window arrival Stephane Sessegnon in attack. The 27-year-old Beninese midfielder was signed from Paris-Saint Germain in the winter transfer window of 2011 for a fee of £6 million on a
three and a half year contract. While Sessegnon is a versatile midfielder, he works best as a playmaker.
Bruce was certain the two attacking players had the potential to form a successful partnership and revealed he was willing to test out his theory in the new season. He revealed he had not played the pair together until the last fixture of last season, in
which they had gone on to perform better than he had anticipated.
The Sunderland boss continued:
“He's a natural. The link-up with Gyan is something that excites me.”
