Sunderland boss Steve Bruce admitted he was extremely disappointed with Titus Bramble, after the 30-year-old defender was arrested for assault and possession of a class A drug. His arrest took place hours after the Black Cats lost to newly promoted side
Norwich City, which has led Bruce to urge footballers to act more responsibly since they have a duty to their supporters.
Sunderland have suspended Bramble until further notice and are currently carrying out their private investigation over the matter. While the Black Cats manager made no secret of how he felt about the unfortunate incident, he was not at liberty to speak to
the media regarding all the details of the matter because of legal restrictions. However, he did little to hide his disappointment for the way Bramble had behaved.
To start off with, Bruce did not think a professional footballer should ever be in a situation where he was involved in a police investigation. He felt the modern footballer had changed and evolved from when he was still playing football and did not think
it was necessarily a good change. Titus Bramble’s involvement in such an incident is highly damaging to the player and the club and highlights the player’s lack of responsibility to their fans and respective clubs.
Bruce said while speaking to reporters:
“Unfortunately now with the rewards they get, they alienate themselves and should show more responsibility.”
He revealed:
“I don't think on a Tuesday night, you should be in a nightclub - I don't think any footballer should be in a nightclub on a Monday night, Tuesday night, Wednesday night, not with a game on a Saturday, especially after the way you have just been beaten
on the Monday night.”
Rightfully so, Bruce felt the footballer had acted rather irresponsibly after the 2-1 loss to Norwich City on Monday night. After a terrible performance, the Sunderland boss did not think the player had the right to be in a nightclub, especially with another
fixture coming up on over the weekend. The English manager admitted being a Premier League manager was tough, but such incidents only made him more determined.
The Black Cats boss said:
“Nothing will derail me. I have been doing it a long time and have been let down many times by certain players.
It makes me more determined, if you like. Through diversity, sometimes, comes a reaction. That sometimes is the case - I hope so, anyway.”
