Sunderland manager Steve Bruce revealed Lee Cattermole, the Black Cats skipper, had taken being dropped from the first-team well and was preparing to bounce back. The 23-year-old English midfielder was somewhat surprised to find himself on the bench against
Stoke City in Sunderland’s last English Premier League fixture, where Bruce’s side managed a 4-0 win.
Bruce, who is a huge fan of Cattermole, revealed he had left the midfielder out of the starting XI because of minor injury problems. He felt the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 under-21 international had to improve his fitness if he wished to remain a permanent part of the
first-team at the Stadium of Light. Cattermole is reportedly training harder in an attempt to win back his place, something that impressed Bruce.
The Sunderland boss said in an interview:
“Typical of Lee, he has rolled up his sleeves and got on with it, and he has trained like a beast this week.
I think he understood that the fight with injuries and all the rest of it, that he wasn't quite there at the moment.
He understood it and took it like the man he is and make no mistake, he will be doing as much as he can to get himself back into the team.”
Cattermole has previously played under Steve Bruce’s management at Wigan Athletic, when the English manager was in charge of the club. Upon his arrival to Sunderland, Cattermole was one of the players Bruce brought along with him to the Stadium of Light.
He signed a long-term four year deal with the Black Cats in the summer of 2009 for a fee of £6 million.
The former Wigan player has made a total of 49 appearances for Sunderland since joining the club in the 2009-2010 season and has not yet scored his debut goals for the Black Cats. Cattermole has a poor discipline record, which has earned him a total of 18
yellow cards and 3 red cards up until now. He has been urged by Bruce to improve his discipline record along with fitness to earn a more permanent position in the team.
