Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn apologises to fans following derby defeat
Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn has apologised to the club’s fans following their derby-day thrashing at St James’ Park.
The Mackems were hammered 5-1 on Sunday, 31 October, in a game where manager Steve Bruce described his side’s performance as a “horror show.”
Quinn told the club’s official website, "It is entirely appropriate that we apologise to our fans. Whilst acknowledging the hurt that the defeat has caused, I would like to emphasise that
everyone at this club will face the music together. Last night the owner and myself sat and reflected on the day's events and we are as defiant as ever that this club is going to make progress.”
The former Republic of Ireland international went on to claim the defeat will spur the players on to win their next game on Saturday, in order to make it up to their fans. "While everyone
here is suffering, the players' hurt must be galvanised into a big performance on Saturday."
The Sunderland chairman continued by promising the problems will be rectified behind closed doors and that the club will move forwards after their biggest Tyne-Wear derby defeat in 56
years.
“I'm not asking for anyone to have sympathy for us, but we are confident that the solution will be found within the walls of our dressing room. We may have to spend a long time apologising,
but this entire football club knows that it owes its people right now and for me that is the priority," explained the 44-year-old.
Sunday’s defeat will have been a bitter blow to Sunderland fans, especially as they saw their side, which is widely regarded as the stronger of the two, ripped apart with such ease and
outclassed for most of the game. Derbies mean more than any other game to the fans. The truth is, the Newcastle’s players played like it, and unfortunately for Mackems fans, their side did not.
