Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn on why striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Asamoah-Gyan-c6791 left for Al-Ain on a season long loan move
English Premier League side Sunderland’s chairman, Niall Quinn, revealed the reasons why they had allowed Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan to leave for UAE side http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Al-Ain-c38290 on a season long loan move. The 25-year-old made the move just before the weekend clash against
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, which the Black Cats lost 2-1.
Details of his loan move have been made public, and it seems Gyan completed the move to Al-Ain just 48 hours after he informed Sunderland manager Steve Bruce that he wanted to remain at the Stadium of Light and earn a place in the starting XI.
At such a short notice, Bruce was unable to wrap his head around the sudden and unexpected loan move and considered it a contributing factor to the 2-1 loss on Saturday. According to the Sunderland manager, the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ghana-c2905 international has moved to the UAE side
for a bigger paycheck.
However, the club chairman revealed there were other factors involved which had led to Gyan’s untimely departure from the club. Quinn felt the player had made up his mind to leave Sunderland during the summer and had not been the same upon his return for
the pre-season training.
Having performed well against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 while on international duty with Ghana, Gyan was linked with a host of top sides. This interest had encouraged the 25-year-old striker to consider his options, which eventually led him to demand a move away even after
the transfer window had been closed down.
Quinn said in an interview on the club’s official website:
“From the moment Asamoah returned for pre-season training we could tell that there were people trying to move him on. We hoped it would pass by, rebuking approaches from the Premier League, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Turkey-c3026 and felt the player would settle back down
and continue to help our cause.”
While Quinn, along with Bruce, had been hoping that Gyan would focus on the Black Cats after the international break, this was not to be the case. After talks with Al-Ain and Gyan’s desire to move, the Sunderland board discussed the matter, agreeing that
Gyan’s departure would be best for everyone.
He continued:
“Steve Bruce, our owner and the board all found the football decision that Asamoah wished to make baffling but I, as chairman, with everyone's full support, decided that this deal was in the best interests of our football club.”
Quinn admitted Bruce had not been happy with Gyan for leaving the way he did, but had made up since then. However, that did not mean in any way that Gyan would be returning to Sunderland next season, with the Ghana international making it very clear that
he did not wish to play for the Premier League side ever again.
Quinn revealed:
“Steve's frustrations towards the player, expressed minutes after the Chelsea game, were understandable at such a time but I can reveal that since then Asamoah and Steve have made contact and they are on good terms.”
