Sunderland complete move for South Korean striker Ji Dong-won on a three year deal
South Korean side Chunnam Dragons confirmed that 20-year-old striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ji-Dong-Won-c18522 had agreed to join English Premier League side Sunderland on a three year contract.
An official statement released by the club stated:
“Ji Dong-won is joining Sunderland on a three-year contract,.
The terms negotiated by the two clubs regarding transfer fee and salary will not be released publicly.”
While it was stated that the transfer fee was not to be disclosed, it is to be expected in the region of £2.1 million, for €2,500,000 on a three year deal.
The likes of Schalke and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/PSV-c40281 Eindhoven were reportedly interested in the services of the young striker, but the Black Cats managed to beat them to the South Korean forward.
The young striker revealed he was excited to have signed for the English Premier League side, at the possibility of facing fellow countrymen http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-Chung-Yong-c21873.
South Korean forward Ji-Sung plays for English Premier League giants Manchester United, while Chung-yong is a winger for Bolton Wanderers.
Dong-won said in an interview:
“I had the impression that Sunderland really wanted me.
I know there will be stiff competition for playing time, and my goal is to become the player that the team wants me to be in six months.
I am also looking forward to playing against (Park) Ji-sung and (Lee) Chung-yong, whom I both admire.”
It was after Dong-won’s performance for South Korea in the Asian Cup 2011 that caught the eye of Sunderland boss Steve Bruce.
Negotiations begun right away and the player was soon convinced to commit to Sunderland, despite interest from other European clubs.
Dong-won made his senior debut for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chunnam-Dragons-c38805 in the 2010 season, making 29 appearances in his first season and scoring an impressive 13 goals.
In the 2011 season, the South Korea striker did not feature for the Chunnam Dragons as many times, making just 15 appearances and finding the back of the net just thrice.
So far, Dong-won has made 11 appearances for the senior South Korean squad and has an impressive goal tally of six goals for his country.
