Sunderland defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/George-McCartney-c14574 has signed a two year contract with newly promoted side West Ham United after a successful loan spell with the Hammers.
After being unable to secure regular first team football with the Black Cats, McCartney decided on making his move to West Ham United permanent. The Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill, who does not have too much use for the defender, had no trouble letting
him move onto another club.
The Northern Irish player has had a two year spell with West Ham United from 2006 to 2008 and will be pleased with making the move permanent once again, especially since the Hammers have managed to earn a promotion to the English Premier League this time
around.
McCartney said in an interview:
“I am delighted to be coming back to West Ham and this time on a permanent basis.
It was great to be part of the side that won promotion for the club last season. It was a fantastic way to end the campaign last year and I am really looking forward to being back in the Premier League with West Ham.”
McCartney began his footballing career with Sunderland in 1998, waiting until 2000 to make his debut against Luton Town in the League Cup. His hard work and consistency earned him the captain’s arm band when Jason McAteer picked up a long term injury.
After being voted Player of the Season by the fans during the Championship winning season, McCartney picked up an injury in the 2005-2006 season because of which he missed most of the season.  From 1998 to 2006, the Ireland international made 134 appearances,
after which he made a move to West Ham United in the summer of 2006.
In 61 appearances he scored a single goal, having spent most of his first season at the club fighting for a place in the starting XI. Two years later he made a return to Sunderland on a long term five year deal for an undisclosed fee.
After loan moves to Leeds United and West Ham United, McCartney has now successfully completed a permanent move to Upton Park.
