Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea has revealed he will not be taking anything for granted despite the Black Cats having improved vastly in the Premier League.
Sunderland have managed to climb out of the bottom half of the Premier League table and are now in the top half of the table. Their recent 2-0 win over Swansea City did well to lift them at 10th position on the table, the same spot they finished
at last season.
There is no doubt that the arrival of Martin O’Neill as the manager of the club has played a big role in the revival of the Black Cats. While O’Shea was extremely pleased with the improvement in form and position, he refused to be carried away by the upwards
climb.
O’Shea said while speaking to reporters:
“The position you are in dictates that.
But from the teams above us to the teams below us, there is not much between all of us, so you know if a couple of wins go together, three or four wins out of the next four or five games, you are right up the table and you are kicking well away from
the relegation zone and seventh, eighth position could be in range.”
He revealed he believed the next few games would determine their position at the end of the season as winning the next few games could mean they would climb as high as seventh or eighth position, while losing the upcoming matches could mean a return to the
relegation zone or bottom half of the table.
O’Shea admitted success or failure solely depended on their upcoming fixtures and urged his side to remain sharp and attempt to secure as many wins as possible. The 30-year-old defender revealed that a loss against Swansea could have resulted in the Black
Cats dropping to 16th place on the Premier League table.
He revealed:
“That's what I spoke about, the fine lines in the Premier League - we could have easily been in that position from September or October onwards and could have been looking to kick on further.”
