Sunderland defender hails attacking approach after win over Chelsea

Sunderland defender Nedum Onuoha believes that his club's 3-0 win over English Premier League leaders Chelsea on Sunday 14 November was due to taking an attacking approach to the game.

With Chelsea missing Michael Essien and Frank Lampard due to suspension and injury respectively, the Black Cats were able to take charge in the middle of the park.
The Blues were also missing first-choice central defensive duo John Terry and Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa, and Sunderland took full advantage.

The North East side took the lead through Onuoha before the break. The England Under-21 cap, who is on loan from Manchester City, weaved his way past three Chelsea players before scoring to end Chelsea's run of nine clean sheets at home in the league.

Strikers Asamoah Gyan and Danny Welbeck were able to round off the victory in the second half, and 24-year-old Onuoha was delighted with the win.

He told the BBC, "Some of our best results have come when we've tried to play more football. We definitely tried to do that and we saw it pays to do that. If we had been more direct, we wouldn't have got the result.
"I don't think they had conceded a goal at home here in the league until this game, so I don't think there were many people putting money on us to get a result, but we were quite confident. The fact Chelsea had a few people missing today definitely opened
the door for us."

The result meant that Chelsea suffered their first loss in the EPL at Stamford Bridge since the 4-2 defeat to Manchester City in February.
Meanwhile, Sunderland rose to sixth in the table, just three points behind Manchester City, who currently occupy the last of the four UEFA Champions League qualification spots.
