The Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill urged his team to take more responsibility and start scoring more goals to help the Black Cats out of the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Sunderland will be taking on newly promoted side Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314 in the mid-week fixture and will be looking to do better than they have before this season. Having scored wins in just three of the Premier League matches this season, Sunderland need to
do better.
Martin O’Neill is aware that his side’s 18 goals so far is not acceptable and that they need to do better than that. He admitted scoring goals was one of the biggest obstacle his side were facing and if they could overcome that, they could continue to climb
up the table.
O’Neill said while speaking to reporters:
"It would be fantastic if we possessed somebody who could score 20 goals a season, that would be terrific.
If it doesn't happen, then you have really got to share them around, and you have got to get players into the penalty area to score, generally speaking.”
The Northern Irish manager felt the strikers were mainly responsible for scoring goals, even though a few players had the ability to score from outside the box. He revealed he was in the process of encouraging players to get in the penalty area and shoot.
He even urged the players to be selfish, as long as it meant they were taking their chances and shooting at goal. The likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicklas-Bendtner-c27726 will definitely have to step up, as so far only the midfielders and wingers have been finding the back of the
net.
He revealed:
"In the penalty area, you have got to be a bit selfish if there's a shot on. Don't try something ridiculous, just throwing a leg at it or something like that, but you have got to take a bit of responsibility."
O’Neill admitted the only way out of the bottom of the league was to score goals, he continued:
“We are where we are in the league and you would say we don't score enough goals, that's pretty plain.”
