Sunderland manager Steve Bruce disappointed with unfair criticism
Sunderland manager Steve Bruce admitted he had been disappointed with rumours suggesting he was close to being sacked after a poor run early on in the season. His future as manager of the club was under speculation and it was believed Bruce would be removed
if he failed to improve results with the Black Cats in the upcoming fixtures.
However, Bruce revealed he was focusing on the upcoming games and did not let the rumours bother him too much. Sunderland secured their first win of the season over Stoke City. The 4-0 win came after a series of disappointing draws and losses, one of which
ended their participation in the Carling Cup. Bruce felt the speculation had been premature as the Black Cats were once again on the track to finish in the top six this season.
Bruce said in an interview:
“The two years previously we've done OK, nothing spectacular. We finished 10th, which was the club's third-highest finish in 55 years.
Then within two weeks (of the new season), all of a sudden you've lost the plot - that's the way it happens.”
Bruce was aware of the pressures the English Premier League managers had to put up with, one of which was unfair criticism. Despite the unpopularity with a small section of the supporters, the Black Cats manager has retained the support of the board, which
makes an early departure for him highly unlikely. It was for this reason that Bruce remained confident and focused on the upcoming fixtures.
He continued:
“The most important for me is to get over it and learn from it, about how quickly things do change up here. But certainly, it's not going to derail me in my thoughts of exactly what we're trying to achieve.”
After having to sell some important players in the summer transfer window, Bruce went on a massive spending spree. He brought in the likes of Wes Brown, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Darren-Bent-c10358
and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102 parted ways with the club. The Sunderland manager said it would take the new arrivals time to settle in, after which he expected their form to further increase.
Bruce revealed:
“The lads need time now to settle into their new environment, settle into the club, and results like the one we got on Saturday will certainly help.”
