Gardner revealed that while Sunderland had put in some decent performances in the opening fixtures of the season, they had been unable to secure a win for one reason or the other. Their first win came at a time when Sunderland manager Steve Bruce was under criticism for not having won a Premier League game. Gardner defended the English manager, claiming it had taken the new arrivals time to settle in.
Gardner said while speaking to reporters:
“We're not used to playing as a team yet, but I think we're getting there. We've had enough time now and we need to start kicking on.”
Gardner was amongst the various players brought in by Steve Bruce during the summer transfer window, he revealed he hoped to continue scoring goals for his new side. The midfielder, who transferred to the Stadium of Light for an estimated fee of £6 million, scored 11 goals for Birmingham City in 52 appearances in all competitions last season.
He continued:
“I've come here with a reputation for scoring goals and I'm obviously keen to keep that going.
The club have put faith in me by paying a fair bit of money to sign me from Birmingham, and I don't want to let them down. That means producing on the pitch and scoring goals.”
Sunderland winger http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sebastian-Larsson-c32733 also revealed he was hoping the Black Cats built on their win over Stoke City in the upcoming matches. The 26-year-old admitted the big home win had been a big confidence boost and would help Sunderland in their next fixtures. Having secured all three points, Sunderland have moved up from the relegation zone to a comfortable spot in mid-table.
Larsson said:
“We had slipped down the league a little bit and you never want to be there, so it's nice to get the first three points and hopefully that can really get us flying for the forthcoming games now.”
