Sunderland played host to Liverpool in the league, as the Black Cats looked to take advantage of the Reds, poor form and pick up three points against them.
The match kicked off with the home side going on and taking the game to the Reds. They had good control of the game early on, and came close to scoring in the 16th minute.

The remainder of the first half proved to be a rather dull affair, as neither side managed to get anything from it and as a result, the half ended with Sunderland leading by one goal to nil.

In the 68th minute, Luis Suarez went on to gather a loose ball and then smashed it into the back of the net.
As a result of that goal, the score was now one all.
The last chance of the game fell to Suarez in the 77th minute. Shelvey took a pop at goal, but saw his effort get blocked out by Mignolet. Suarez tried to turn the rebound in with his head, but could only nod it over the bar in the end.
At the end of a very hard fought battle, both the teams went on to share the points from the game.
