The English winger is in a tight race to be fit for the upcoming tie against Liverpool, after straining his thigh during the International break.

Although supremely talented, the attacker was never able to crack the Manchester City first team and eventually had to settle for a minor role with the club going on to win the Premier League.
Determined to resurrect his International career and make a mark on the English top flight, he chose the Stadium of Light as his next destination after leaving the Blues this summer.
Impressive during his first two outings for the club, Johnson was called up to the Three Lions squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.
However, he was unable to feature in any of them, as he picked up a thigh injury before things got started. For the last few days, he has been on the treatment table and he could miss the upcoming tie with Liverpool if things continue this way.
While the situation is far from perfect, Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill claimed that the medical department will be checking up on the front-man today, after which a progress report could be generated.
“It would be great if Johnson was fit for Saturday. He came back pretty well immediately after he felt the injury. He seems to be doing a bit better and he did a bit of training with Wes Brown and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Phil-Bardsley-c29900 yesterday. He’s always optimistic so we’ll
see how he gets on over the next few days.”
“Today we should be in a better position to see how things are, once everyone is back from the international break,” the tactician was quoted as saying.
The Black Cats would normally be wary of the threat posed by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, but the Reds have been struggling for creativity in attack and could succumb to the potent line-up that O’Neill is likely to name.
