Question:

Sunfish or Zuma sailboat? Comparable boats?

I was looking for a small sailboat to learn on and also be a little daycruiser for me and the wife. I was looking at the Sunfish and Zuma because they seem easily trailable with my 4 cylinder car and easily fit in my small garage.

I also like the idea that the Sunfish has an association and I could possibly race if I got really into it.

My criteria is to learn to sail (possibly charter larger boats). Easily fit in my small garage. Be able to tow very easily. Be able to take the wife out on the Marina and bay..

Comfort would be nice but I don't mind getting a little wet.

Suggestions?

  1. you're going to be fine either way. A sunfish has more sail area and is a bit bigger, but a zuma's rig means it'll probably point a little higher upwind. Sunfish are a helluva lot of fun, though, and they're everywhere. A sunfish or a used supersunfish would be my choice.

  2. Well do you think you are going to be this dedicated to sailing once you decide on a sailboat?  You don't have to own a Sunfish to race.  The Zuma would do fine.  Maybe you can finagle (layman's term for con) a marina to let you try each boat to see how well you and your wife fit.  Good luck.
