Question:

Sunflower problem? Help? (No green thumb here!)?

I planted Sunflowers all along our fence (for privacy). They grew really fast! According to the packet they are supposed to grow to about 12 feet (and I planted some 6 ft ones too). They are now 4-5 feet tall, no flowers yet but they are very strong and green....at the top.

The new leaves at the bottom seem to be turning yellowish brown.

I don't have alot of gardening experience but can you tell me if this is normal and what I should do?

Any tips to keep them looking nice?

  1. well they could be getting watered to much or too less or too much light or too less light or deises or bugs i dunno

  2. Go ahead and trim the yellowish brown leaves off.  They are turning this color due to the rest of the plant shading it and they are not getting enough light.  this is a natural process as they will fall off a little later, so don't be afraid to pluck them off.  Sunflowers are very hardy once they get that big.

  3. I think they are getting too much water.  To keep them looking nice, you may at 12' tall they need some type of support, otherwise they will get very top heavy and start to topple over once the flower blooms.  Their great for the fall time also, because the birds will all come and take the seeds from the heads as they are going dormant.  Don't hack them down, leave them up for the birds to enjoy.

  5. all sounds good.

you might try some fertilizer.... Fish emulsion, DILUTED and added 1 time a week for about a month will improve the plants.

water every other day, and make sure the soil does not compact too tight...if you have clay soil.

    good luck
