http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Manohar-Gavaskar-c91863 backs Dhoni to continue as Test skipper - Cricket News Update
The legendary India batsman has backed the beleaguered http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MS-Dhoni-c2028 to continue as the Indian Test captain, since he does not see a suitable replacement even though he is not fully confident of Dhoni's captaincy in the Test format.
The once calm and cool but today’s besieged Indian skipper has been facing criticism of former cricketers and pundits for his defensive captaincy approach in the ongoing Test series against Australia, which his side trails 0-3.
Dhoni would not be playing the fourth and final Test of the series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 starting at the Adelaide Oval next week as he would be serving the one Test ban he was handed by the match referee for the slow over rate in Australia’s only innings at
Perth last week. In his absence vice captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 would lead the side.
Gavaskar said that at Adelaide, Dhoni would not be missed as a batsman but as a leader.
"The team won't miss him as a batsman," said Gavaskar, commenting on Dhoni's one Test ban. "But as a leader he will be missed despite the fact that his record is not good.
"At the moment, I can't think of anyone who is good enough to take over from Dhoni," he added further.
The 30-year-old Ranchi boy enjoyed a dream run as captain since taking over from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Dravid-c2229 in 2007. His first assignment as the Indian skipper was the 2007 World T20 Championship where he led the inexperienced India side to the T20 Champ title by defeating
arch rivals http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in a nail-biting final in Johannesburg.
Dhoni kick started his career as Test skipper in an extraordinary way as he remained unbeaten in his first 11 Tests as captain, winning 8 while the other three were drawn. He led the side to the World Number one Test status in December 2009, a feat that
his side enjoyed for almost 2 years before surrendering it to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 in August last year.
Overall, the wicketkeeper batsman has led http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in 37 Tests with a win loss ratio of 17 to 10, with 10 draws. Unfortunately, 7 of his total 10 Test defeats as captain have come in succession and all abroad, a run that started in England last summer with
4-0 drubbing.
Following the run of Test defeats, many have stated that Dhoni is inept to lead the side in the longest format of the game.
"The need is to find a new captain from beneath the wreckage. Dhoni is no longer the answer in Test cricket," former Australian skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Michael-Chappell-c63914 wrote in his column on Tuesday.
