http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Manohar-Gavaskar-c91863 slams BCCI for resumption of Indo-Pak cricket ties – Cricket News Update
Former captain of the Indian team, Sunil Gavaskar, has hit out at the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to hold a cricket series between Pakistan and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 later this year, as a move to initiate the revival of the bilateral sporting
ties between Pakistan and India.
“Being a Mumbaikar I feel what is the urgency when there is no co-operation from the other side,” Gavaskar said.
The sporting ties between the two nations have been on hold since 2008, after the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 toured India and were defeated
by their hosts.
Since then, both teams have only played each other in international events, such as the Champions Trophy, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 this March. Although the Pakistan Cricket Board repeatedly attempted to initiate
the resumption of ties, the BCCI appeared reluctant. Pakistani players were also barred from participating in the lucrative Indian Premier League.
However, recent attempts on the BCCI’s part to resume relations with their Pakistani counterparts suggested that bilateral ties were well on their way to being revived. PCB chairman Zaka http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ashraf-c46397 was invited to watch the final of this year’s Indian Premier
League in Chennai, after which a proposal for a bilateral series was discussed. In addition, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sialkot-c842 Stallions, Pakistan’s domestic T20 champions, were invited to participate in the Champions League T20, to be held later this year.
The prospect of a bilateral series was also discussed at an ICC meeting in Kuala Lumpur, and the BCCI finally made an official announcement today, confirming that the two teams will be playing each other in India during December/January.
The series in question consists of 3 ODIs, which will be played in Chennai, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Delhi-c780 and Kolkata, and two T20Is, which will be held in Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
The series is scheduled to take place in between England’s tour of India. The Poms will be playing a 4-match Test series and two T20s against the Men In Blue before flying back home for Christmas, after which they will return to play a 5-match ODI series.
The slot in between has been filled by the series against Pakistan, which Gavaskar has criticised as another bad move.
“... the time the players have between the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 series, it is not going to be there. They are playing England in November-December but now they are not going to get the breather,” Gavaskar said while speaking to
NDTV. “Players need the time to look after their injuries and get better.”
