Sunil Gavaskar wants remuneration to work on IPL Governing Council
Sunil Gavaskar has declined to sit in the IPL Governing Council without any remuneration. He opines that IPL is a commercial enterprise so it must pay the former cricketers on its governing council.
Earlier, IPL governing council, in its meeting, envisaged several changes in its structure and constitution that included halving the strength and reducing the term while also limiting the powers of the council.
Another important decision was the removal of Lalit Modi from IPL as well as BCCI while also barring him from any kind of future association with both. It was also decided to investigate the three franchises accused of irregularities.
Without a doubt, Modi was the man who raised IPL to a multi-million dollar league but BCCI President http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shashank-Manohar-c89791 has expressed in clear terms that Modi is no longer part of BCCI neither can he now claim to be a suspended chairman.
Chirayu Amin has been elected as the new chairman of governing council during the meeting. Similarly, Farooq Abdullah and I.S Bindra were dropped from the panel. Abdullah currently works as an advisor to ICC while I.S Bindra is the
former BCCI president.
The meeting further decided to include two former cricketers to the council but with this the annual salary which they were to receive has been terminated. According to Manohar Shashank, Ravi Shastri- one of these two former cricketers-
has agreed to work in his honorary capacity. The second former cricketer would either be Sunil Gavaskar or http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mansur-Ali-Khan-c1894 Patudi. When BCCI president was asked about Gavaskar’s role in the new governing council, he gave a controlled response.
Manohar said that Gavaskar is there on the council but his consent is necessary as there would not be any remuneration. As per the previous rules, former cricketers were paid Rs. 1 crore for being on the council.
On the other hand, Gavaskar believes that non-BCCI members of IPL governing council should be given salary as they provide their valuable expertise, experience and time to the enterprise. Earlier, Sunil Gavaskar had offered his free
services for the Indian cricket but declined to do the same for IPL due to the commercialism associated with it.
Moreover, the council's term has also been slashed from five years to one year. Also, a constitutional amendment has been introduced which authorizes only the board secretary to sign contracts on behalf of IPL. Jyotiraditya Scindia
(finance), Farooq Abdullah (Marketing), Ajay Shirke (NCA construction, infrastructure) and Venkat Sundaram have been appointed new BCCI committee heads.
Ravi Shastri has also been replaced with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Anil-Kumble-c44737, who will now look after the Indian National Cricket Academy. Dilip Vengsarkar has been given the portfolio of chairman, cricket development committee. This committee also includes
former cricketers, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pranab-Roy-c82496 and Prashant Vaidya.
Surely, changes in IPL structure were a much awaited step and it is expected to bring some positive results. These would also enable transparency in the cricket enterprise.
